When I was asked to paint a border collie cross, I was keen to oblige because this dog was particularly charming. She had a beautiful face with a lovely round looking nose that looked like it had been "stuck on." In every photograph, she just seemed to exude happiness. I couldn't wait to paint her.
I was sent numerous photographs of her, some sitting on a rug by a log burning fire, some sitting on a sofa, some in a characterful country kitchen. I was asked if I could paint the background to match the colour of the pale blue Smeg fridge and the Smeg range cooker. This was a happy, healthy dog, taking pride of place in a comfortable, beautiful home. It was clear that she was loved.
Yet Petra had very different beginnings. She had been on a journey.
Here is her story.
Petra is just one of the many cats and dogs rescued from the streets of Bulgaria. "Help Bulgaria Street Cats and Dogs" are a charity that rescue cats and dogs from the cold streets, where they are abused, tortured and abandoned. The charity rescues them, gets them veterinary care and nurses them back to health. They then try and find them forever homes in the UK.

With thanks to Gary and his partner Kate, who have supplied the above information and given Petra her UK forever home.
